This Review presents the evidence of a therapeutic and prophylactic role for vitamins, minerals, phytochemicals and other specific nutrients in modern medicine. Current research data of relevance to the clinical application of vitamins, minerals, trace elements, enzymes, amino acids, fatty acids, etc., is gathered from many converging disciplines of nutritional science, including biochemistry, metabolism, clinical nutrition, phytochemistry, neuroendocrinology, nutritional pharmacology and clinical ecology to provide treatment rationale for the health care professional who is interested in using nutritional approaches in medicine based on peer review literature. Emphasis is placed on appropriate dosage, toxicities, contraindications, synergistic effects of nutrients and drug-nutrient interactions. Nutrient related clinical disorders are highlighted.
